The Pittsburgh Pirates split a doubleheader with the Detroit Tigers Wednesday afternoon. The Bucs fell in the opening game 3-2 after three costly errors, all in the bottom of the fifth inning. The errors allowed all three Detroit runs after the Pirates had taken a 2-0 lead.
The Bucs won the nightcap 7-2. Roberto Perez and Daniel Vogelbach hit home runs in that game and David Bednar earned his third save of the year with two scoreless innings.
Outfielder Ben Gamel had five hits in the doubleheader, scoring two runs and driving in two runs.
The Pirates are off today before opening a four-game series with the Cincinnati Reds tomorrow night. The series includes another doubleheader Saturday. That twin bill will be a day-night scenario, with games at and 12:35pm and 6:40pm. They will enter the series 10-14 overall. The Reds are off to a 3-21 start and have lost eight in a row after losing 18-4 to Milwaukee yesterday.
