The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Houston Astros 5-1 last night and took two of three games in their series. Jared Jones earned his first major league victory in 634 days when he tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits. Carmen Mlodzinski closed the game and earned his first save of the season. He allowed just a solo home run in the sixth inning, did not walk a batter and struck out three. Ryan O’Hearn led the Bucs with his ninth home run of the year and drove in three. Brandon Lowe had two hits and scored twice.
The Pirates gained a game on Milwaukee, who lost to San Francisco. The Bucs are now 4-1/2 games behind in the National League Central. They are now the top Wild Card in the National League.
The Bucs open a three-game series in Atlanta tonight. First pitch is 7:15pm. WISR pre-game begins at 6:50pm. Mitch Keller will start for the Pirates. The Braves have the best record in baseball. Former Pirate Martin Perez will start for Atlanta.
Saturday’s game begins at 4:10pm. WISR pre-game begins at 3:45pm. Braxton Ashcraft is scheduled to start.
Sunday’s game begins at 1:35pm. WISR pre-game begins at 12:35pm. Bubba Chandler is scheduled to start.
The Pirates return home after the game to open a six-game home-stand with the first of three games against the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday.
