The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago Cubs 4-3 last night at Wrigley Field. First baseman Yushi Tsutsugo hit a two-run double in the fifth inning that won the game for the Bucs. Five Pirate relievers tossed six scoreless innings to win the game, as the Bucs improved to 6-7. Wil Crowe won his first game of the season. He entered the game in the fourth inning and allowed just one hit in 2-1/3rd innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out five. Reliever Dillon Peters retired both batters he faced, and stretched his hitless batter streak to 25, the longest for the Pirates since at least 1974.
The Bucs and Cubs play three consecutive afternoon games this weekend in Chicago. The games begin at 2:20pm. Hear today’s game on WISR beginning with the pre-game at 1:55pm.
The Pirates have sent pitcher Roansy Contreras back to Triple-A Indianapolis. The Pirates want to stretch innings out for Contreras and bring him back up as a starter. He appeared in three games as reliever this season, walking three and striking out 10 in 7-2/3rds innings.
