The Pittsburgh Pirates traded Gold Glove-winning catcher Jacob Stallings to the Miami Marlins for three prospects Monday. The return brings two of Miami’s top-25 prospects to the Bucs. They include two right-handed pitchers in Zach Thompson and Kyle Nicolas and outfielder Connor Scott. Thompson is the most major league ready. He made 26 appearances, including 14 starts with the Marlins last season and had a 3.28 ERA. He was drafted by the Pirates in 2011, but chose to go to college. Thompson was then a fifth-round pick of the Chicago White Sox in 2014.
Outfielder Ben Gamel has agreed to a one-year contract worth $1.8 million. He was arbitration-eligible, and was projected to make nearly $3 million if he won.
The Pirates have also designated for assignment left-handed pitcher Steven Brault and first baseman Colin Moran.
