The Pittsburgh Pirates won the first game of a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds via a walk-off in the 9th inning to win by a score of 5-4.
The Pirates entered the 9th trailing 4-3, but a game-tying double by Kevin Newman allowed Michael Chavis to single in the winning run with the bases loaded. The Pirates collected 13 hits in the game, including 3 by Ben Gamel.
Starting pitcher Bryse Wilson held the Reds to 5 hits and 3 runs over 7 innings while recording 4 strikeouts, marking the second night in a row a Pirate starter completed 7 innings.
The Pirates and Reds play again tonight with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. WISR will not have coverage of this game due to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ preseason game, with the broadcast beginning at 5 PM. The Pirates will play again tomorrow at 1:35 PM, coverage of that game beginning at 12:35 on WISR.
