Pitt Panthers quarterback Kenny Pickett was named the winner of the “Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award” Tuesday. The award is presented annually to the top upperclassman quarterback who is set to graduate with his class. He is the first Pitt player to win the award, which has been presented since 1987.
Pitt offensive coordinator Mark Whipple resigned Tuesday morning. A source told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the decision was family-related. It comes after three seasons at Pitt, and Whipple led an offense that has Panthers quarterback Kenny Pickett heading to New York City this weekend as a Heisman Trophy finalist. Whipple apparently will not coach the team in the Peach Bowl December 30th.
The weekend will be busy for Pickett, who will attend the Golden Arm Award banquet in Baltimore Friday, before heading to New York.
