As the new legislative session begins, members from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives are looking to protect consumer data.
State Representative Ed Neilson, a Democrat from Philadelphia, and local Representative Stephanie Scialabba have proposed legislation that would allow consumers to opt out of targeted advertising.
The proposed law will also allow users to correct mistakes in their personal data, along with requiring businesses to protect consumer privacy and limit the collection of consumer data.
The Attorney General will have authority to enforce violations.
While Representative Robert Leadbeter, a Republican from Columbia County, has introduced the Personal Privacy Protection Act that is similar to the previous legislation.
But it adds limits on collection of personal data by the government and established penalties for unauthorized use or sale of personal information.
