After years in the making, today the REAL ID requirements go into effect.
That means all domestic flyers will need to have an identification that is REAL ID compliant. You will also need the REAL ID to enter certain federal facilities.
Jim Garrity of AAA says there are still those who haven’t gotten a REAL ID compliant ID.
“This has been something that has been a long time coming,” Garrity said. “But alarmingly some recent numbers from PennDOT showed that only about a quarter of Pennsylvanians had gone through the REAL ID through the DMV. That doesn’t mean they don’t have REAL ID compliant identification at home, it just means they don’t have that star on their driver’s license.”
Pittsburgh Airport officials say if you do not have a REAL ID, you may still be permitted to get through security but you’ll be subject to more security checks.
There will be another day exclusively for processing REAL IDs at the Point Plaza DMV this upcoming Monday.
