With many residents spending much of today preparing a feast, officials are offering reminders for safe cooking in order to prevent fires.
The American Red Cross says that cooking is the leading cause of home fires and injuries.
Officials say one of the biggest ways to prevent fires is to stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling.
They also offer a few more tips including:
- Use a timer to remember that the stove or oven is on.
- Keep anything that can catch on fire away from the stove top.
- Avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves.
Finally, the Red Cross urges everyone to have a smoke alarm and fire extinguisher near the kitchen and on every level of the house.
