An amendment in a bill that passed the U.S. House yesterday would fully repeal a Department of Energy rule that threatened the future of Cleveland Cliffs Butler Works plant.
Congressman Mike Kelly proposed the amendment as part of the “Hands Off Our Home Appliances Act.” It would completely eliminate any energy efficiency standards for transformers, along with nixing the switch to amorphous steel cores in distribution transformers.
The final DOE rule delayed the plan until 2029.
Kelly says he was encouraged by the DOE final rule, but wants to ensure it is fully repealed in order to protect the Butler Works plant.
However, the future of the bill appears murky in the Democrat-led Senate.
