Although the downtown Butler post office officially received a new name at the end of last year, an event later this week will mark the occasion.
Congressman Mike Kelly will host a dedication and renaming ceremony on Friday at 11 a.m. accompanied by officials from the U.S. Post Office.
The “Andrew Gomer Williams Post Office Building” was renamed in honor of local Civil War hero veteran Williams who achieved the rank of Captain, participated in more than a dozen battles over three years, and was wounded four times. He later opened a law firm in Butler and served as a state representative and state senator.
The process to change the name began over a year ago with Kelly proposing the name change before the measure passed the US House and Senate with unanimous consent and was signed into law by President Joe Biden in December.
