Congress is expected to go back into session today trying to elect a new Speaker of the House.
Jim Jordan of Ohio is the nominee for Republicans and needs 217 votes to secure the job. However in the first round of voting, 20 Republicans opposed Jordan—and that includes Congressman Mike Kelly of Butler.
Kelly instead voted for Steve Scalise, who was initially chosen by Republicans but never received a floor vote. Kelly says he believes Scalise deserves a full vote on the floor before another candidate.
Kelly is also circulating a proposal that would give the Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry more power over the next 30 days so the House of Representatives can do legislative work.
