United States Representative Mike Kelly is alerting residents about a scam involving someone claiming to be calling from his office.
Kelly has been informed that some of his constituents are receiving calls from a person claiming to be affiliated with his office asking for social security numbers.
The person goes on to say that the numbers will then be used to check for the status of stimulus payments. Kelly’s office does not and will not do this. When people call to ask for help with the status of stimulus payments, Kelly’s representatives will refer them to the website established by the IRS.
The only time a Kelly staff member will ask for a person’s social security number is when that person wants help completing a privacy form connected to a request for assistance from a federal agency. That number is then stored securely and shared only with the agency from which the help is needed.
Anyone who receives a call like this should immediately hang up and then call Kelly’s district office to let them know.
