Pitcher Zach Hare of the Riverside high school baseball team completed an historic WPIAL run Wednesday, leading his team to the Class 3A championship with a perfect game. Hare had entered the title game by not allowing a hit in three games and 17-1/3rd innings. Riverside defeated Quaker Valley 1-0 in the championship yesterday. Hare did not allow a hit, run or a walk over his complete game. No pitcher in WPIAL history had ever worked 20 innings or more in the playoffs, and not allowed a hit or even a run.
The win was also the seventh for Riverside manager Dan Oliastro, who is in his 57th season at the age of 81. He has now passed Abby Fallquist of McKeesport for the most baseball championships in WPIAL history.
