A large number of Saxonburg residents became concerned Wednesday afternoon after a rumor began circulating on social media about the possibility of protests.
About 100 local community members and business owners were in downtown Saxonburg around 4pm on Wednesday. Several people mentioned a rumor they heard through a social media post about buses from Pittsburgh with protesters planning to march down Main Street. These rumors have not been confirmed as having any basis in fact. Most community members and/or business owners we spoke with supported the right to have one’s voice be heard but also wanted to protect their establishments and the town.
Although, a small group of local protesters walked down the sidewalks of Main Street, no buses with protesters from other areas arrived in Saxonburg. The group was very peaceful. No streets were blocked off, although there were barriers in front of the library’s parking lot. We spoke with an individual in the group that was protesting and he confirmed they were local individuals who just wanted to peacefully express their opinions about current goings-on in the country.
Police were on hand as well as Saxonburg’s mayor.
