Another case of West Nile Virus was discovered in Butler County but there is plenty that can be done to prevent further spread.
The Mercer County Conservation District announced earlier this week a second mosquito in the Zelionople Borough tested positive for West Nile Virus. There are currently no human cases reported and most will not feel symptoms of the disease. The elderly and those that are immune compromised are the most at risk.
Zoe Heckathorn, Vector Management Coordinator with Mercer County Conservation District, says there are several preventive measures that can be taken to avoid to risk any exposure. Such as dumping low water levels, such as kiddie pools or bird fountains, wearing pants, and bug spray.
Heckathorn also says that even though this is serious, if precautions are taken people shouldn’t be worried.
“I totally understand the anxiety about it, especially in Butler because it’s a new thing. I would just say that it’s here, it’s important, but the best thing you can do is preventive measures.”
