The State Senate returns to session today and there are calls for the chamber to act on gun control bills.
The State House passed bills that would expand background checks and also create an extreme risk protection order, allowing guns to temporarily be taken away from someone deemed to be danger to themselves or others.
Governor Josh Shapiro says there needs to be a bipartisan coalition to pass these bills.
“We are the only state in the nation with a full time legislature that is divided one chamber Democrat, one chamber Republican. Both of these bills passed in the State House with bipartisan support,” Shapiro said. “Now, we need to do the hard work necessary to build that same coalition in the state senate to get this done.”
The bills are expected to have a challenge though passing in the Republican controlled Senate.
