The Butler County Sheriff is warning of a scam recently reported by a local resident.
Mike Slupe says that a county resident received a call from someone Monday afternoon in regard to a court case outside the county.
The resident gave the caller his full name and address at which time the caller said the issue had been resolved. About six minutes later, the same resident received a call from a phone number associated with the Butler County Sheriff’s Department.
The caller said he was a deputy and the resident had a warrant out for missing jury duty. When the resident said he planned to speak to Sheriff Slupe in person about the issue, the caller said he would call back on a secure line then hung up. Normally, the goal of an exchange like this is to obtain financial information in order to steal money.
Slupe reminds residents who receive a call like this should hang up on the scammer immediately. If any financial information is exchanged, call 911 and report this situation to local or state police.
