November is National Native American Heritage Month and Slippery Rock University is recognizing the history of the campus in how it relates to indigenous people.
As part of a shared governance effort with faculty, SRU has adopted a new land acknowledgment statement to be used permanently by students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
As part of an effort that began in 2019, SRU students with the First Nations Club helped contribute to the statement which recognizes the Seneca Nation of Indians along with the Erie, Lenni Lenape, and Susquehannock native communities as previous occupants of the area.
The statement will be able to be used as a consistent message approved by the university at public gatherings or meetings as well as published in event programs or in class documents.
