With the busy winter season this year, PennDOT is reminding drivers of tips when driving through snow squalls and drifting snow.
Snow squalls are brief and intense periods of snow that can accumulate up to two inches of snow in 30 minutes and feature wind speeds up to 30 miles per hour. They can also cause whiteout conditions where visibility can be less than a quarter mile.
PennDOT has offered these tips when having to drive through a snow squall.
- Slow down gradually and drive at a safe speed
- Turn on you head lights and your hazard lights if caught in a snow squall
- Stay in your lane and increase your following distance
- Use your defroster
- Keep windows and mirrors free of ice
- During whiteouts come to a complete stop only when you can safely pull off the roadway
- Do not stop the flow of traffic as that could start a chain-reaction collision
- Do not pass a vehicle moving slowly or speed up to get past that vehicle
