Connoquenessing Township Supervisors will consider adding a motion to a future agenda that would increase the amount of the municipality’s fire tax.Connoquenessing Volunteer Fire Company
Lieutenant Matt McConnell presented information to the board of supervisors and a couple dozen residents at a special meeting Thursday night.
The township’s current fire tax of .5 mils was enacted in 1994 and was used to pay for a new engine they bought in 1995. McConnell is asking for at least a two mil fire tax which would translate into an increase from about $24,000 in guaranteed yearly revenue to over $90,000 in guaranteed yearly revenue for the Company.
Even though such a tax increase would see Connoquenessing Township residents go from paying just over $6 per year for fire protection to about $37 annually, a wide majority of those attending the Thursday meeting expressed support for the idea. Connoquenessing Borough residents already pay a 2 mil fire tax.
The increased revenue would be put toward funding a new building at an estimated cost of about $2 million as well as a new fire engine with an estimated cost of about $800,000. No action was taken at this special meeting regarding the fire tax proposal.
