Slippery Rock University has been chosen as a recipient of federal grant funding to support a program which helps those with intellectual or physical disabilities.
The United States Department of Education has awarded SRU a Transition and Postsecondary Programs for Students with Intellectual Disability initiative Grant worth nearly $300,000 over five years.
This funding will allow SRU to add staff to support and grow the Rock Life program. SRU administrators redesigned the curriculum of the program a couple of years ago focusing on specialized coursework, career preparation, and functional living skills.
The Rock Life program currently has 23 students enrolled, which is the highest number since the program was created in 2016 to provide a four-year, non-degree, certificate-based experience, for students with intellectual disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder.
