Slippery Rock University has announced a new women’s sport and the return of a previous men’s sport.
SRU will be bringing back men’s wrestling, with the goal to begin NCAA Division II competition during the 2027-28 academic year. Slippery Rock’s wrestling program built its reputation from 1958 to 2006, with a record of 362-294-7 over that stretch, with many of those wins coming at the NCAA Division I level. Eight different men oversaw the team as head coach, with the most impactful being Fred Powell, who coached the program from 1967 to 1991 with a 66% win percentage. He helped produce numerous successful wrestlers, including one who reached bronze-medal status in the Olympics. Powell was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2005, and is a member of the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame.
Slippery Rock has also announced a commitment to add women’s flag football as a varsity sport, with competitive play scheduled to begin during the 2027-28 academic year. It will be supported by a fundraising campaign set to launch in early 2026. The school noted the growing popularity of women’s flag football at area high schools and the fact the sport will make its Olympic debut at 2028.
Slippery Rock will begin a nationwide search for its the head coaches of both sports during the 2026 spring semester.
