The efforts of a local law firm and a State Representative have resulted in a state agency changing policy.
According to Republican Representative Stephanie Scialabba, the Pennsylvania Department of Education is rescinding guidelines on Culturally-Relevant and Sustaining Education Standards.
This comes after a successful lawsuit filed in 2023 by the Butler-based firm of Dillon McCandless King Coulter and Graham and with Mars Area School District as one of the plaintiffs in Commonwealth Court.
A signed mediated settlement agreement states that school entities have no legal obligation to implement or comply with the program guidelines. Previously funding could have been withheld from schools that did not undergo trainings in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion or Critical Race Theory.
