State Police have issued a statement on a recent development in the nearly 40 year old unsolved Winfield Township disappearance of a local child.
The State Police are investigating a recent online post and voicemail from a woman who claims to be Cherrie Mahan. Police have not been able to make contact with this person but they were able to obtain fingerprints of the woman. An initial review of those prints does not match those of Mahan.
On February 22nd 1985, eight-year-old Cherrie Mahan was dropped off at her bus stop after going to school at the South Butler School District, but disappeared before she made it the 300 feet to her Cornplanter Road home in Cabot.
While Mahan was legally declared dead in 1998, the case still remains open. A PA Crime Stoppers cash reward of $5,000 has been offered for information that leads to an arrest, the solving of the case, or the location of Cherrie.
Many tips and leads have been offered over the years, but the investigation remains ongoing. Contact the Butler Barracks of the State Police for more information.
