The Pittsburgh Steelers continued work Tuesday to get under the NFL’s salary cap prior to today’s 4pm deadline. They have now restructured five contracts, released three players and saw the retirement of offensive lineman Ramon Foster.
Among the players agreeing to restructured contracts were Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and defensive backs Joe Haden and Stephen Nelson.
Offensive lineman Zach Banner has agreed to a new contract to stay with the Steelers. He was a restricted free agent.
Cornerback Mike Hilton received a second-round tender, and will count more than $3 million toward the salary cap. Hilton is an undrafted free agent, who worked his way into a starting role with the Steelers.
The Steelers have also lost versatile offensive lineman B. J. Finney who will sign a two-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks.
The Steelers have signed long-snapper Kameron Canady to two-year contract. He was a restricted free agent. The team also agreed to a deal with free agent fullback and special teams standout Derek Watt, who is the brother of linebacker T. J. Watt.
Linebacker Ryan Shazier has been placed on the reserve/retired list, but will continue to be a part of the Steelers organization.

He will become the first player in NFL history to move to another organization after spending two decades with a team.

The Cowboys will be losing tight end Jason Witten, who will be signing a one-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders. Witten had retired from Dallas in 2017 to join the Monday Night Football broadcast team, before returning to the NFL last year.
None of the announced deals this week have been officially approved by the NFL – because of the lack of signed contracts. Free agent players, especially, have not been able to travel during the current circumstances.
