Organizers consider the recent “Stuff-A-Bus” event to benefit the Kids Weekend Backpack Program a success but more help is needed.
This year’s collection to restock shelves in preparation for the 2020-21 school year needed to be held virtually as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.
The managers of the Butler Walmart and Sam’s Club worked with the program committee to come up with options to allow donors to shop and purchase needed items remotely. Butler Township Commissioner Sam Zurzolo volunteered his time and vehicle to transport collected items to McQuistion Elementary School.
Approximately 260 students in grades kindergarten through 4 benefit from this program each week but that number could climb this upcoming year due to COVID-related economic hardships. Monetary donations are being accepted through the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation.
