With the closure of the landfill in West Sunbury earlier this year, Butler Township residents will see an increase in the cost of trash collection.
A Waste Management contract amendment was approved by Butler Township Commissioners Monday evening that will allow for an increase of $2.33 to the monthly bill of residents.
Township administrators received a letter from Waste Management representatives in April requesting an increase as a result of needing to haul trash further after the closure of the Northwest Sanitary Landfill.
A review by the Township solicitor determined that the resulting monthly rate is still lower than the ones proposed by other bidders for the contract in 2018. Butler Township currently has a contract with Waste Management for trash disposal that runs through December of 2026 but the process to secure a new deal will begin in January.
The exact date of the rate increases will be determined by Waste Management but they will continue through the end of next year.
