A Butler resident is facing multiple felony charges in connection with allegations of theft from a local organization.
According to a criminal complaint filed by the Butler City Police, the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame recently became aware of money stolen by 68-year-old Thomas Turner while he was in the role of treasurer.
Turner allegedly presented fraudulent statements to the organization showing that it was in good financial standing but later admitted that he had been stealing money since 2020 in order to pay utility bills. Police believe Turner initiated over 90 transfers totaling over $36,000 out of the organization’s account for his own personal use over the years.
The Butler County Sports Hall of Fame Board states that their board of local volunteers immediately notified law enforcement when they became aware of the situation following their recent induction ceremony event and they are cooperating fully with the investigation. They go on to say that the organization was left without funds to pay for vendor services incurred at the event so board members personally paid for the services. They are currently “evaluating the next steps to ensure” they can continue with their mission of honoring local athletes.
