Union leaders from Butler Memorial Hospital are weighing in following the announcement that Independence Health System is merging with West Virginia University Health System.
Members of the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals, also known as PASNAP, are calling for “full transparency” following the announcement.
“Butler Memorial caregivers have held our hospital together through every crisis,” Butler Memorial ICU nurse Tammy May said in a statement. “We will advocate relentlessly to make sure this merger strengthens care instead of further destabilizing it.”
Officials say that members have “weathered years of uncertainty” since the last merger of Butler Health System and Excela Health.
They’re calling on WVU Medicine to retain current staff, invest in patient care, and collaborate with frontline caregivers.
The proposed merger between Independence and West Virginia could close by next fall.
