The Butler Area School District will receive some help feeding local students and community members this week from a new partnership.
Thanks to a $1 million donation from the PNC Foundation, the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania has created the Students and Families Food Relief Fund.
Using this funding, another partner in this mission, Eat’n Park will provide two nutritious meals a week to the 1,500 children in the Butler Area School District signed up to receive food assistance.
Butler Region Director for the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania Amy Franz explains what will be happening on Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Center Avenue Community School and the Emily Brittain Community Partnership and Demonstration School.
“Each child will get two meals which will be their dinners for Friday and Saturday,” Franz said. “So it’s about 3,000 meals total we’ll deliver. These will be the traditional meals they’ll get as far as the breakfast and lunch program, as well as dinner on Friday and Saturday.”
A number of school districts throughout Allegheny, Butler, Westmoreland, and Fayette Counties are participating in this program but Butler is the first in Butler County.
A total of 55,000 meals have been distributed so far through this program with current funding to allow for another nearly 200,000 meals in the future.
