With summer now in full swing, it’s not unusual to see strong storms pop up. Pet owners know that can sometimes lead to their furry friends having a big scare. But what can you do next time to help your pets?
During thunderstorms pets can become very afraid of their surroundings. Kaitlyn Allen, an associate veterinarian from Butler Veterinary Associates, says to remain calm and keep their normal routine intact because pets can pick up on your anxiety.
Allen also says you can give pets prescribed medication from the vet or play music during the storm to distract them.
But Allen said the most important thing is always making sure you secure your pet.
“Any animal no matter how well adjusted they can still get frightened by a stray clap of thunder. You don’t want to lose your animal, and they go out on the road especially when visibility is poor,” Allen said. “Please keep your pets on a leash or in a fenced-in area where they are safe.”
