A new movie about child sex trafficking is making headlines but locally trafficking of any person is more common from someone you know.
The movie “Sound of Freedom” follows Tim Ballard, a special Agent for Homeland Security, attempting to save two children who signed modeling contracts but were then sold into human trafficking.
But according to Kaitlyn Veiock, medical advisee and prevention advocate for Victim Outreach Intervention Center (VOICe), there are a lot of misconceptions on who and what trafficking looks like in 2023.
“In reality a lot of the time, traffickers work to build relationships with victims. They use different tactics to lure them, recruit them, groom them, and eventually control that person,” Veiock said.
Often trafficking as it occurs in media are not a real portrayal of the crime. To fight against false information being spread Veiock asks that community members be informed and aware of resources made available.
“As long as we know what we need to look for and who to call, we can call on those people to walk us through that process,” Veiock said.
