A mosquito sample collected in Erie County has tested positive for West Nile virus.
The Erie County Department of Health confirms this is the second sample to test positive in Erie this year.
West Nile virus is an infection that can result in an inflammation to the brain.
Anyone traveling to Erie County this summer should be cautious and follow these guidelines:
- Dispose any refuse that can hold water—such as tin cans, containers, and in particular used tires
- Drill holes in the bottoms of recycling containers and check uncovered junk piles.
- Clean clogged roof gutters every year
- Empty accumulated water from wheelbarrows, boats, cargo trailers, toys, and ceramic pots.
