The Penguins swapped veteran defensemen Tuesday with the Colorado Avalanche, sending out Brett Kulak in return for Samuel Girard and a 2028 second-round pick. Girard is five years younger than Kulak and has an additional year on his contract. The 27-year-old also is more offensively inclined. He has registered as many as 37 points in a season and has 12 in 40 games this campaign. Girard makes $5 million per year, and his contract runs through next season. Kulak is set to be an unrestricted free agent in the summer.
Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas has been active over the past year working trades, and in particular, stocking up on draft picks.
