Governor Tom Wolf’s administration is warning about the impact of food assistance if his disaster declaration were to end early.
PA Secretary of Human Services Teresa Miller said the additional SNAP benefits may go away if the legislature were to end the emergency declaration.
States are only able to extend this additional assistance if they are under a state disaster or public health emergency,” Miller said. “All of that goes away if the legislature uses a new authority to terminate the emergency disaster declaration.”
The comments come as Pennsylvania voters will decide whether or not the legislature should play a bigger role in disaster declarations by allowing the House to address the Governor’s emergency declaration after 21 days.
GOP members view Miller’s statements as a threat to take away the benefits if voters decide in favor of the referendum.
