Hundreds of volunteers are expected to gather at North Main Cemetery Saturday morning to honor veterans in a yearly tradition.
This is now the fifth year that Wreaths Across America has held the event in Butler. Volunteers will gather for a ceremony at noon, and then take time to lay nearly 1,000 wreaths on the graves of veterans.
Organizer Charles Veazey says the response has been overwhelming. “This community is wonderful. We fundraise all throughout the year, and every year since we’ve been doing this, all the veterans have been able to get a wreath,” Veazey said.
He estimates that around 300 volunteers helped last year. It is open to the public, who can then help with the wreaths after the ceremony.
“Our motto is remember, honor, and teach. We remember the fallen; we honor those who serve through our ceremony; and we really love when families come, because we want to teach the children about the freedoms they have is because of these men and women,” Veazey said.
Veazey says to be at the North Main Cemetery by 11:30 a.m. You can enter through Route 8 and there will be volunteers to help direct you where to park.
