The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 last night in the opening game of a four-game series. The Cardinals earned the victory with a walk-off solo home run off Pirates reliever Dennis Santana with two outs in the ninth inning.
Johan Oviedo made his third start of the season since returning from Tommy John surgery. He allowed one run on three hits, walking one and striking out five. He left the game after the Pirates had built a 4-1 lead, thanks to back-to-back home runs by Bryan Reynolds and Spencer Horwitz in the third inning. Reliever Andrew Heaney allowed five earned runs in the fifth inning.
The Pirates and Cards play again tonight at 7:45pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 7:20pm. Mitch Keller will start for the Bucs.
