The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 last night at PNC Park. The Bucs battled back from an early 2-0 deficit to take 4-3 lead in the sixth inning. The Brewers scored the game-winning two runs off reliever Carmen Mlodzinski in the seventh inning. Mlodzinski’s record fell to 7-7 after his second blown save of the season.
For the second straight night, the Pirates outhit the Brewers (12-10), but still lost the game. All three Pirates runs came via home runs. Oneil Cruz hit his 19th of the season in the fourth inning. Brandon Lowe hit a two-run shot in the fifth for his 31st round-tripper of the year. Rookie catcher Rafael Flores hit his ninth home run in the sixth inning to give the Bucs a brief lead.
Lowe has now hit 17 home runs this season at PNC Park. He is one shy of tying the all-time mark, set by Brian Giles who hit 18 in 2001.
Jared Jones started last night’s game for the Pirates. He allowed three runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out nine.
The Bucs and Brewers complete their series this afternoon at 12:35pm. WISR pre-game begins at 12:10pm. Wilber Dotel is slated to start for the Pirates.
With the home runs last night, the Pirates have now broken the all-time season mark for team home runs.
