The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 last night. Tommy Pham had a two-run single in the sixth inning to lead the Bucs against his old team.
The Bucs managed just two other hits – both were by Isaiah Kiner-Falefa. He was stranded at second base after a single in the second inning. Kiner-Falefa led off that sixth inning with a double, and was later thrown out at home just before the Pham game-winning hit.
Bubba Chandler earned his first career victory. Chandler entered the game in the fourth inning, and tossed four innings of shutout baseball. He allowed one hit, walked one and struck out three.
Chandler became the fifth pitcher to earn a save and a win in his first two major league games since saves became an official statistic in 1969.
Carmen Mlodzinski started the game, allowing one run on three hits and striking out four.
Dennis Santana earned his 10th save of the season.
Last night’s win clinched the season series with the Cards for just the second time in the last 12 seasons. The Pirates have won seven of the 12 games this season against the Cardinals.
The two teams complete their four-game series today at 2:15pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 1:50pm. Braxton Ashcraft will start today’s game for the Bucs. The rookie has thrown 46-2/3rds innings to begin his career. He is 4-2 with a 2.70 ERA.
The Pirates have won five of their last six games and seven of their last 10. Last night’s win was their 20th victory on the road this season.
