The Pittsburgh Pirates host the St. Louis Cardinals in Bradenton today after an off-day Wednesday. First pitch is 1:05pm.
The Pirates traded reliever Kyle Nicolas to the Cincinnati Reds Wednesday in exchange for utility player Tyler Callihan. The hard-throwing 27-year old Nicolas split last season between the Bucs and Triple-A Indianapolis because of control issues. Nicolas has pitched 86 MLB games for Pittsburgh. He is expected to pitch for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic.
Callahan is 25, and selected in the third round of the 2019 MLB Draft. He entered this year the 19th-best prospect in the Reds organization. Callahan had made his debut in Cincinnati last year, appearing in four games before suffering a season-ending injury. He broke his left arm catching a fly ball, but crashing into the left-field fence. Callihan can play infield and outfield.
