The Pittsburgh Pirates broke training camp following a 5-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Starting third baseman Nick Gonzales had a double and drove in a run. Hunter Barco pitched 2-1/3rd innings of shutout baseball. He allowed a hit, a walk and struck out three. Earlier in the day, Pirates manager Don Kelly had called the rookie left-hander into his office to discuss the “tough decisions” that had to be made yesterday. Then he told Barco he had made the major league roster as a reliever. Barco had also been in the mix to be the Pirates starting five pitchers.
The Bucs finished Grapefruit League play 17-13 overall. They went 3-7 over their last 10 games.
The Pirates open their season Thursday afternoon in New York against the Mets. Game time is 1:15pm. WISR air-time will be 12:50pm.
The Pirates have an off-day Friday, then play the Mets Saturday and Sunday afternoon, before heading to Cincinnati for a three-game series. The Pirates home opener is Friday, April 3rd at 4:12pm.
Several teams complete their exhibition schedule today – the first regular season game will be Wednesday night – when the San Francisco Giants host the New York Yankees for an 8:05pm first pitch. The game will be televised on Netflix.
Former Pirate Andrew McCutchen has made the Texas Rangers roster. After being bypassed by the Pirates in the off-season, Cutch signed a minor league contract with Texas late in spring training.
