The Penguins goals in last night’s loss came from Egor Chinakhov, who scored his career-high 17th goal of the season. Rickard Rakell added the other Penguins goal.
Kris Letang earned an assist on the Chinakov goal and became the 21st NHL defenseman in history to reach 800 career points.
The Penguins played without Evgeni Malkin, who is day-to-day with an injury. They have now lost two straight games, and have been outscored 11-3 in those two games.
The Pens have allowed an NHL-worst 4.3 goals-per-game since March 5th, a span of 11 games.
The schedule, with 11 games remaining, does not ease. In addition to travelling to face a pesky Ottawa team tomorrow night, the Pens will host the second-best team in the NHL – Dallas Saturday. The Stars are second only to Colorado in their Western Conference Central Division. Like the Avalanche, they are the only teams to have clinched playoff spots. Among their stretch in the next seven games – the Penguins will travel to face the Islanders, host Detroit, travel to Tampa Bay and host defending Stanley Cup champion Florida for back-to-back games.
New Jersey, Washington (twice) and St. Louis remain on the schedule. The Penguins regular season wraps April 14th.
