The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-7 last night, sending the Pirates to their third straight defeat. The Pirates fell behind 6-0 before mounting a comeback that still fell short. The Pirates ended the night outhitting the Cardinals 13-12 in the loss.
The Cardinals jumped on Pirates rookie starting pitcher Braxton Ashcraft for six earned runs over 4-1/3rd innings. He allowed six hits, walked three and struck out seven. Another rookie, Hunter Barco pitched the final 4-2/3rds innings, allowed five earned runs.
Barco had been called up for the game, with Wilbur Dotel being sent to Triple-A Indianapolis.
The Bucs host the Cardinals again tonight at 6:40pm.
The Pirates have fallen back to the bottom of the National League Central Division with a 16-14 record. They are tied with Milwaukee at 3-1/2 games behind first-place Cincinnati.
