A bill that would give the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) the ability to have separate playoffs for private and public schools has passed in the state house.
House Bill 41 passed through the state house yesterday by a vote of 178 to 23.
The bill says that the PIAA will have the option to create separate state playoffs for private and public schools but the bill does not force the PIAA to create the two different playoffs.
Although, if passed by the senate and signed by the governor into law, a change cannot be made immediately. The PIAA would need to schedule a joint meeting in all 12 districts that make up the PIAA then allow for public comment.
The bill would also not automatically apply to all sports, the PIAA would have to decide if all sports will have separate playoffs or just a select few.
The PIAA will have to vote on both options in a public meeting but if they strike down the change they will have to make a statement and justify why no changes are being made to the playoffs for any sports.
Private and public schools would still be able to play regular season games against one another if the PIAA makes this change.
Charter schools would fall under public schools according to the bill.
The bill now moves to the Senate Intergovernmental Affairs and Operations Committee before a vote on the senate floor.
