The Pittsburgh Pirates were swept in their four-game series by the St. Louis Cardinals following a 10-5 loss Thursday afternoon. Paul Skenes allowed five runs, four earned over five innings in his latest start. He allowed eight hits, including two home runs. He did not walk a batter and struck out nine. His record fell to 4-2. Mars native JJ Wetherholt led off the game with his seventh home run of the season. Later in the opening inning, Jordan Walkers hit his ninth home run of the year, a two-run shot.
Brandon Lowe hit his eighth home run of the season. He and Bryan Reynolds had two hits a piece. Nick Gonzales had his hitting streak stopped at 10-games.
The Pirates have now lost five games in a row. Their record has fallen to 16-16 this season.
They host the first-place Cincinnati Reds for a three-game series beginning tonight at PNC Park. First pitch is 6:40pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:15pm. Mitch Keller will start for the Bucs.
The Reds enter the game one game ahead of the Chicago Cubs. They are 20-11, tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees for the second-best record in baseball.
The Bucs and Reds game Saturday begins at 4:05pm. WISR pre-game begins at 3:40pm.
