Pennsylvania’s top law enforcement official has announced that a settlement has been reached with a large social media company.
According to Attorney General Dave Sunday, a multistate coalition has settled with Meta that includes changes to existing age assurance framework, limiting the time kids can spend on platforms, and eliminating access to harmful content by kids.
The settlement also includes over a billion dollars in remediation payments nationwide with Pennsylvania estimated to receive between $516 million and $729 million over a period of several years.
Settlement terms are subject to Court approval but are expected to include a combined two hour daily hard cap time limit on Instagram and Facebook with mandatory pauses after 15 minutes of continuous use as well as night-time blocks from midnight to 6 a.m. along with limited school-time access for kids on weekdays during the school year.
The settlement would also place limits on social comparison features including beauty filters and “like” counts.
