The American League defeated the National League 3-2 last night in the All-Star Game played in Los Angeles. It was the ninth consecutive time the A.L. has won the annual classic. Ten American League relievers allowed the N.L. one hit after the first inning, striking out nine batters.
All of the runs in the game came via home runs. St. Louis first baseman Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run shot in the first inning. New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after he hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and Minnesota’s Byron Buxton hit the game-winner immediately after Stanton’s shot.
Pittsburgh Pirates reliever David Bednar pitched a scoreless ninth inning in his All-Star debut for the National League.
Two former Pirates also made appearances in the game. Joe Musgrove of the San Diego Padres pitched a scoreless third inning. Yankees reliever Clay Holmes picked up two outs in the eighth.
The Pirates return to play following the All-Star break Friday night when they host the Miami Marlins at PNC Park.
