The Chicago Cubs completed a three-game series sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates following an 8-4 victory Wednesday. The win clinched a playoff berth for the Cubs, their first since the 2020 season.
The two teams combined for seven runs in the first inning yesterday. The Cubs put the game away with three more runs in the sixth inning. The Pirates went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position, and left 11 on base. They struck out 11 times. Catcher Joey Bart hit a three-run home run in that first inning. The Pirates committed three errors.
The Pirates are off today, then host the Athletics for a weekend series beginning Friday night. The Pirates visit Cincinnati and Atlanta next week to close their 2025 season.
