Chase Briscoe gave Joe Gibbs Racing its second spot in Nascar’s championship-deciding season finale with an overtime victory Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway. Briscoe raced to his first career superspeedway win to join teammate Denny Hamlin in the four-driver winner-take-all final race in Phoenix in two weeks.
Hendrick Motorsports drivers Kyle Larson and William Byron led the two-lap sprint in the overtime restart, but Larson ran out of gas and Byron was spun by another driver, allowing Briscoe to be pushed by teammate Ty Gibbs from sixth-place on the restart, to the win. The drivers head to Martinsville Speedway this Sunday afternoon, where the other two drivers to compete for the championship will be determined.
Entering the race this weekend, Larson and another Gibbs Racing driver, Christopher Bell, are above the elimination point line.
Hear this Sunday’s race from Martinsville on WBUT beginning at 1pm.
